Best Flooring for Underfloor Heating UK

Not all flooring plays nicely with UFH. Here's what survives the heat - and what warps, gaps and squeaks.

Underfloor heating is now standard in most new UK builds and a popular retrofit. But pick the wrong floor and you'll lose heat output, warp the boards, or void the warranty.

SPC and LVT are the gold standard for UFH. Their dimensional stability handles the constant temperature cycles, and the slim profile (2–5mm) gives excellent thermal conductivity - meaning your room heats faster and runs cheaper.

Engineered wood works too, provided you stay under 27°C surface temp and the manufacturer signs off (most premium ranges do). Avoid solid wood entirely - it will gap and cup.

Laminate is a mixed bag. Cheaper ranges insulate too well, blocking heat. Look for an explicit UFH rating.

Rule of thumb: anything with a tog rating above 1.5 (including thick underlay) will choke your UFH system. Use a low-tog acoustic underlay specifically designed for heated floors.
