Choosing an oak

Oak runs from pale and sandy to dark and smoky, so choose with samples rather than a screen. Look at them in daylight and at night, next to your walls and furniture. Smaller rooms and rooms with little light tend to feel bigger with lighter oaks. For the full guide to the pattern and how it is laid, see our herringbone laying patterns guide.

How much oak herringbone to order

Add 15% to the room area for the extra cuts. A 20 m² room needs 23 m². Packs are sold whole, so divide by the pack size and round up. A Daytona herringbone pack covers 2.926 m², so 23 divided by 2.926 is 7.86, which means 8 packs. Use the flooring calculator for your own room.

Fitting

These floors are glued down, which keeps the herringbone flat and flush. The subfloor must be smooth, flat and dry, and we recommend a professional fitter. You will need a suitable flooring adhesive. Daytona is suitable for underfloor heating. For other ranges, check the specification first.

Oak herringbone questions

Is oak herringbone vinyl as good as real oak?

It looks like oak and is warmer and quieter underfoot, and spills wipe away. It is not wood, so it cannot be sanded and refinished. Choose it for easy care rather than for a floor you plan to refinish.

Is it more expensive than plank?

Usually a little, because of the extra waste and slower fitting. Compare with all glue down LVT or see all herringbone LVT.
